HISTORY Stafford Town FC can trace its roots back to 1959 when, as Rising Book Youth Club, they made their first appearance in the Stafford Youth League, a league they remained in until 1961, when with a change of name to Rising Brook Old Boys they entered the Stafford Amateur League.
Nothing much changed for the next thirteen years until under the Chairmanship of Ron Dawson the club founded a junior sections with teams ranging from U10 to U18.
At the point (1976) Stafford moved to the County League North, but having found form quickly moved up to the Midlands Combination League winning the second division title in the mid 1970s. However due to financial pressures the team returned to the County League North in 1982 under the management of Gordon Evans and the late Reg Berks who came to the club from Port Vale.
Stafford Town continued their involvement in this league under firstly Kevin Heath and then Mick Handley who lead the team to the Bourne Sports Trophy and Staffs Vase - in the latter case winning 2-0 against Eccleshall in 1984.
Subsequently Town moved to the Staffs Senior League and yet another Staffs Vase final in 1988 - this time losing out to Rocester.
Paul Kelly took over the management of the team who, in 1990 moved from their Burton Manor home to Stafford Cricket and Hockey Club Headquaters. Paul maintained the club's tradition of playing attractive football before handing over the reigns to Chris Curtis. This hand over coincided with the merger of the club with a most successful Sunday team MSHD who had just won the Midland Sunday Cup defeating Half Moon of Sheffield 2-0! Some of the players from those merger days are still playing for the Town today (2000).
The running of the team became more professional although the amature status of the team has been maintained. In 1991/92 Town just missed out on the Senior League title on goal difference despite losing only two league games all season. After finishing third the following season the Club had the consolation of winning the Staffs Vase again and having their application to the Senior League accepted - this time with their home ground at Rowley Park Stadium.
The first season in the WMRL was a triumph, the club taking the Championship despite a frantic run-in at the end of the season which saw them play 16 fixtures in the final five weeks!
Stafford Town were now on the move once more - this time to the Marston Road home of Stafford Rangers - a home ground they have remained on to this day.
Current manager Allan Sommerville took over the reigns from Chris Curtis in 1997/98, bring to an end Chris's nine years as manager of the club. In 1998/99 Allan guided Stafford Town to their highest ever finish in the Premier Division - 3rd place - just one point behind 2nd place Cradley who were promoted thanks to a late flurry of goals at Ettingshall in the last scheduled match of the whole season.
If not to be out done in season (1999/2000) Stafford Town won the Division, and with it much deserved promotion to the Midlands Alliance Football League.
Town had difficulty over the next two seasons in adapting to the higher level of competitive soccer. Allan Sommerville resigned and the players who had previously done so well moved on. Managerial changes followed without any real stability from a playing point of view. Local young players became associated with the club, and after a disappointing start to the 2001/2002 season Town finished just below half way in a very competitive league.
Under the leadership of Manager Frank McLeod, and playing coach Dave Langston Town hope to improve on last seasons creditable position. Certainly there is a spirit and willingness from all concerned to take the club forward and consolidate at the present level Stafford Town are associated with.
